Case Study: Marotta Scientific Controls, Inc. supplies a major
manufacturer of Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (AUV) with valves for
ambient pressure of up to 5000-psi.
Overview: A major designer and manufacturer
of AUVs required a commercial valve with high reliability for a
filtered seawater application, subject to 5000-psi ambient pressure and
up to 4500-psi line pressure.
The requirements were:
- Low cost
- High reliability
- Customer-manifold mounted
Nearly as important to the customer was that he had
open and frequent communication with Marotta’s technical staff, to keep
the design and test effort on track.
Marotta Scientific Controls has extensive experience
with deep-sea applications and supplies valves in several optional
configurations:
- With pressure compensators
- Modified to be submerged in the customer’s compensating tank
- In hard-back design with no pressure compensation
This customer selected Option 2, best suited to his
system and cost requirements. Marotta started with its standard
solenoid valve, an off-the-shelf design rated for 6000-psi line
pressure. With modifications to the coil and body to allow the free
flow of compensating fluid throughout the valve, and ported to mate
with the customer’s manifold, Marotta qualified and delivered a sub-sea
valve within four months.
This valve is available for similar sub-sea,
high-pressure applications. Marotta will modify the existing body to
fit customers’ installation requirements.
